Liverpool Medical Institution
22nd Annual Sixth Form Medical Conference

Monday 22nd & Tuesday 23rd December 2008

(Details to be announced in October)

Increased numbers of doctors are going to be required over the next few years.  Medical schools and places are increasing in numbers but only the best A-level results are demanded.  Different universities provide different types of courses that appeal to different people.

This two day meeting will advise 6th formers about where and how to apply (and how not to apply), what it is like to be a medical student and a junior doctor, what life is like in hospitals and in general practice.

Interspersed with this will be talks from doctors, an opportunity to try your clinical skills and a chance to hear from other members of medical families.

This two day meeting will give you:

1)
the opportunity to talk to others who are thinking about medicine as a career.
2)
information about different medical schools and their different courses and which might suit you.
3)
an opportunity to think about problem based learning versus more traditional and integrated courses.
4)
the chance to hear about admission policies and philosophy from the Dean and Sub Dean  (including delayed entry and clearing).
5)
an opportunity to hear from those who read and accept your UCAS form.
6)
help and information about interview techniques.
7)
an opportunity to talk to medical students from different universities.
8)
time to talk to junior doctors
9)
information about the wide range of careers in medicine.

... and an opportunity to ask questions and be helped to find the answers.

The number involved in a conference like this means that we cannot provide true "hospital experience" although we do arrange a visit during the course.

Those wanting to spend time in hospital before applying to medical school are free to approach any of the speakers who will be pleased to help them. Alternatively, the conference organisers should be able to help you. Medical schools expect applicants themselves to have put some effort into arranging this sort of work experience.
