Archives
The Archives document the history of the Liverpool Medical Library (later named Liverpool Medical Institution) from 1779 to the present. Liverpool doctors have contributed significant developments in medicine and we are fortunate to have a few of their personal archives. Of particular interest are those of Hugh Owen Thomas - pioneer of orthopaedics, his nephew Sir Robert Jones the orthopaedic surgeon and David Waldie - one of the first to use chloroform for general anaesthesia. In addition we hold archives of medical societies with strong ties with the Institution.
The Archives recently benefited from a grant from the Wellcome Trust under their Research Resources in Medical History programme.
There is a printed listing of part of the collection and records of our holdings also appear on the Archives Hub database.
