Medical Historian

The Liverpool Medical History Society was founded in 1984. It holds five meetings as year, usually at the Liverpool Medical Institution, on a wide range of topics. It also publishes the Medical Historian.

2007 Meetings

4th October               Liverpool Medical History Society Annual General Meeting followed by Dr Richard Barnes 'Moments of Madness'.

1st November            Dr Stephanie Snow, Shropshire  'Poison, Myth and Fear: the Dark Side of Chloroform in Victorian Britain'

6th December            Professor Robert Owen, Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Liverpool ' Robert Jones, a Liverpool Pioneer

2008 Meetings

31st January               Dr Gregory Anderson Formerly Head of the Department of Economics, University of Salford. 'Protecting the Health and Welfare of a Now Forgotten Workforce: the Activities of the Liverpool Clerks' Association in the 19th and 20th Centuries’

6th March                    Dr Peter Drury Emeritus Consultant Anaesthetist, Royal Liverpool University Hospital 'From Much Wenlock to Athens: A Life of Dr William Penny Brookes'

6th June                       Joint Meeting with History of Medicine Society of Wales. This will be an all day meeting in the Liverpool Medical Institution.

The Bulletin of the Liverpool Medical History Society

The bulletin of the Society, Medical Historian, has been published annually since 1988. Speakers are invited to submit a written (referenced) version of their paper of up to 8,000 words for inclusion in the number issued at the end of the session.
