A HISTORY OF THE AMBULANCE

The Modern Ambulance

In the 1970's research was undertaken to engineer a new design for ambulances to reduce the vibration felt by the patient.

The photograph on the right shows an experimental prototype used in university of Bristol trials. the quality of the ride approached that of a good saloon car.

It was the second half of the 20th Century before vehicles were built specifically as ambulances. Even so they were often designed without the least regard for the effects of illness or injury. There were many who expressed concern over the "mortality of the ambulance ride"

The image to the left shows a fleet of four Daimler ambulances operated by the City of Bath Ambulance Service in the 1950's.
